What to Do When Your Heat Goes Out
When your heat fails during a Long Island winter, quick action is critical. Here's what to do before calling us:
- 1Check your thermostat: Make sure it's set to HEAT mode and the set temperature is above the current room temperature. Replace batteries if needed.
- 2Check the circuit breaker: Find your electrical panel and look for any tripped breakers related to your furnace, air handler, or HVAC system. Reset any tripped breakers.
- 3Check the furnace filter: A clogged air filter can cause furnace shutdown as a safety measure. Check the filter and replace it if it appears gray and dirty.
- 4Check the pilot light (older systems): If you have an older furnace with a standing pilot light, check if it's lit. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to relight it safely.
- 5Call us immediately: If none of the above resolves the issue, stop troubleshooting and call (631) 612-6928. We'll dispatch a technician to your Long Island home within the hour.
⚠️ If you smell gas:
Leave your home immediately, do not use any switches or lights, and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Do not call us until you are safely outside.
