The Modern Cooling Solution for Long Island Homes
Many older Long Island homes were built without ductwork — ductless mini-splits are the modern solution for comfortable, efficient cooling and heating without tearing up walls. Whether your home was built with steam heat, electric baseboard heating, or has an addition that never got connected to the main HVAC system, a ductless mini-split delivers whole-home comfort with minimal disruption during installation.
LI Heating & Cooling installs and services all major mini-split brands — Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, Carrier, and more. We size each system correctly for your space, identify qualifying equipment for NY rebate programs, and provide a detailed written proposal before any work begins.
Unlike a central AC system that cools your entire home at once, mini-splits give you zone-by-zone control. You only cool the rooms you are using — which reduces energy consumption and gives different family members independent temperature control in their spaces.
Why Ductless Mini-Splits Work So Well for Long Island Homes
- ✓Pre-1970 LI homes with steam radiators have no duct system — mini-splits add cooling without major construction
- ✓Additions, sunrooms, and converted garages often lack duct access — a single-zone mini-split solves it cleanly
- ✓Mini-splits add heating AND cooling in one system — replacing window AC and electric space heaters simultaneously
- ✓Zone-by-zone control means you only cool occupied rooms — reducing energy waste compared to whole-home central AC
- ✓Inverter-driven compressors modulate output — more efficient than on/off cycling of traditional AC units
- ✓Quiet indoor operation — whisper-quiet air handlers vs. noisy window units
Mini-Split vs. Window AC
Window AC units have their place — low upfront cost and no installation required. But for homeowners serious about comfort, energy efficiency, and year-round use, ductless mini-splits consistently outperform window units across every meaningful measure.
| Ductless Mini-Split | Window AC | |
|---|---|---|
| Heating capability | Yes — heat pump down to 5°F | No |
| Energy efficiency | SEER2 18–30+ | SEER2 10–12 typical |
| Noise level | Very quiet (indoor unit) | Moderately loud |
| Window blockage | None | Blocks window |
| Security risk | None | Entry point when unit removed |
| NY rebate eligible | Yes (qualifying models) | No |
What to Expect from Mini-Split Installation
Mini-split installation is much less invasive than running ductwork. Here is what the process involves: We mount the outdoor compressor unit in a location with good drainage and airflow, near your electrical panel if possible. Indoor air handlers mount on an exterior wall — wall-mount, ceiling cassette, or floor-mount configurations are available depending on your room layout. A small hole is drilled through the exterior wall for the refrigerant line set, electrical conduit, and condensate drain.
Most single-zone installations complete in a single day. Multi-zone systems with 2–3 indoor units typically take 1–2 days. We handle all permit applications where required and commission the system fully before leaving — testing both heating and cooling modes in every zone.
